The world is changing in the turbulent times of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. From the Industrial Revolution to the American Revolution, find out how the foundations of our modern lives were built.

Between 1700 and 1900 CE, societies around the world underwent massive changes. The British Empire was growing, the first European settlers had put down roots in America and would eventually form the United States, and technology was advancing at breakneck speed. In 1700, the only way to send a message over a long distance was by letter, and this could take weeks to arrive. By the end of the 19th century, it was possible to pick up the telephone and speak to someone on the other side of the world in just a few moments.

From the Industrial Revolution to the American Revolution, explore how these developments made our modern lives possible.

Mary Seacole

Mary Seacole was born in Jamaica in 1805, and it was here that at a young age she watched her mother's work as a local healer and began to care for the sick. Later in her life, Mary travelled to London to build on her existing medical knowledge. In 1854, the Crimean war began, and Mary wanted to help but her offers were refused. Determined to carry on, Mary travelled to the area to establish a field hospital near the battlefields, where her excellent nursing skills and immerse bravery won her much support and admiration from those serving in the war.

Florence Nightingale

Travel back in time to explore the unsanitary conditions of some hospitals during the 1800s, then see Florence Nightingale at work improving conditions and standards of cleanliness for patients. Her approach to nursing improved outcomes for soldiers injured during the Crimean War, and set many standards we expect in healthcare today.
